The ejTalk Website

Our goal is to make it clean and simple.

While the trend in web presentation style has been to find more technology for dynamic, reactive and interactive sites, it has also spawned a collection of side-effects. Sadly, most of these plug-in technologies are pixel based. For those people who use very high or very low resolution displays the resulting display is hard to use since it is much too small or much too big. Also, most of these technologies are supported first and best (or only) on the MS Internet Explorer.

Probably because our focus is perceived as a bridge between the academic and the application development worlds, the visitors to our site fall largely in two distinct camps:

  • Academic/Engineering folks who lean toward Linux/C++ and who use some basic browser that is something like a late 90's Mozilla decendant. They are not likely to have javascript, cookies or sound enabled (or even available).
  • Speech Technology Industry Developer folks who are predominately MS/PC based. Many of their products and services are PC based. They have or are willing to install plug-ins to support all manner of special functionality (i.e. the SALT browser plug-in for IE).

With the exception of specific Demos and Tools, this site is based entirely on relative size text and simple images. You should be able to change the text size in your browser ( in IE ctrl - mousewheel or in Netscape ctrl "[" or "]"). It relies on colors and styles to convey the content. Each page should scale acceptably up and down as the text size for the browser is changed. Some simple javascript behaviors are included on some pages, but only if they are universally (and silently) ignored by browsers without these capabilities.
